An oral appliance is a two-piece device that is placed over upper and lower teeth to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in place of CPAP/BIPAP devices or in place of surgically implanted devices. They offer ease and convenience of use and are relatively inexpensive compared to alternatives.
Mechanism of Action: The relaxation of the jaw and tongue can close an airway during sleep resulting in a life-threatening condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. An oral appliance maintains an open airway during sleep by preventing the tongue/jaw from falling backward and closing off the airway.
Types of Devices: Partially customized devices and fully customized devices.
Type I: Partial custom device is made over a prebuilt frame at our sister Sleep Center.
Type II: Fully custom device is built exactly to the shape of your teeth and mouth using our advanced digital intra-oral scan and robotics-assisted CAD manufacturing process. It is then fine-tuned for treatment of OSA at our sister Sleep Center.
Type III: Custom device is similar to a Type II device with additional built-in digital chip use-related tracking capability to meet FAA/CDL/personal compliance requirements.
Oral appliance customization may require an in-person visits to Sleep Medicine of Texas located in Tyler, Texas. We may also offer an at home impression kit for convenience of customization to avoid a trip to the office. Please ask us if this is an option for you.
If you have questions, please call Sleep Medicine Institute of Texas at (903) 787-7533 or email us at Request an Appointment at the Sleep Medicine Institute of Texas (sleeptyler.com).
